NYU's Los Angeles Program is seeking a local, part-time instructor to teach an undergraduate course that will explore the evolution of music branding and its current successful applications. The course will be under the sponsorship of NYU's Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development Music Business Program.
The course is expected to be taught in the Fall 2024 semester (August - December) and will take place in the academic center in the Fairfax/La Brea area of Los Angeles.
Course Description
Of all the deals signed by music artists, brand partnerships are the most strategic. Much in the same way that companies like Nike, Coca-Cola and Apple are well-defined brands with core attributes and values, artists are brands unto themselves whose fans expect them to behave a particular way and stand for certain principles. If a brand deal doesn?t represent an artist?s values, it can adversely affect an artist?s personal brand and overall business ? and vice versa, if an artist doesn?t strategically align with a brand?s objectives.
Course Goals
Understand and identify the role of branding in advertising, marketing strategies, contract law, sponsorship and other sectors of the music industry
Work in teams on a midterm project
Study case studies of key branding deals and scenarios to develop critical thinking that can be applied to your assignments
Learn about the evolution of music branding, and its current successful applications
Discover different career opportunities in music branding

A strong candidate will have a college degree, and preferably a doctorate, JD, MFA, MBA, or equivalent training in a relevant field, as well as experience teaching courses at the undergraduate level within an accredited degree-granting program. Industry experience in film, TV, music, cable, social media, and/or music would be a plus factor for qualified candidates.

In the cover letter, please highlight any relevant experience you have in teaching and describe your teaching philosophy.
Since this position will require the instructor to critically evaluate the established syllabus and bring their own unique perspective to the course, candidates are strongly encouraged to arrive at the interview prepared to discuss potential syllabus ideas.
