Job Summary
Caltech Academic Media Technologies (AMT) is a film production, event, and educational technology support team providing innovative, creative, and technical solutions for Caltech's mission-critical efforts in research, education, and outreach. Activities include:
Creating videos and broadcasts for education, outreach, promotion, news, fundraising, and internal and external communications.
Supporting in-person, virtual, and hybrid events including meetings, lectures, symposia, press conferences, town halls, Commencement, and special events for the Board of Trustees, Office of Strategic Communications, Advancement and Alumni Relations, academic divisions, and JPL.
Providing technology, tools, and training for in-person and online teaching and learning.
This position resides in a fast-paced environment requiring strong technical, creative, problem-solving, and customer service skills. Reporting to the AMT director, this position will provide technical event support and manage the technical audio-visual aspects of executive meetings. The ability to work collaboratively with the AMT team, campus clients, and vendors is critical for success.
Essential Job Duties
As a member of Caltech's Academic Media Technologies team, this position will:
Direct a production team during live campus events including: camera and audio operators, technical director, video control and engineering teams, etc.
Set up and operate live streaming hardware and software for broadcasts on Caltech's channels including YouTube, Facebook Live, and Zoom.
Provide technical event support for Zoom meetings, Zoom webinars, and Zoom Rooms, including event registration pages, surveys, and generating post-event reports and summaries.
Craft audio-visual solutions for events with campus clients requiring site visits, audio-visual problem solving, vendor coordination, and preparing quotes and invoices.
Setup and operate presentation laptops and audio-visual equipment including cameras, microphones, mixing boards, projectors, speakers, amplifiers, projectors, and related audio-visual equipment.
Edit video and audio footage, and encode for multiple uses such as for YouTube, Facebook Live, podcasts, and live events.
Manage the AV team that supports the Board of Trustees meetings. This includes: training the team on the support roles, writing support documentation, filling in any AV support role, creating work shifts, creating invoices, holding post-event lessons learned meetings, and working closely with the Office of the President.

Basic Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or equivalent, with at least 7 years of related experience.
Ability to operate audio-visual and recording equipment such as cameras, audio boards, microphones and sound systems, video switchers, and live broadcasting hardware and software.
Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (AfterEffects, Photoshop, Premiere, Illustrator, Media Encoder, Encore, Audition), Wirecast, OBS, Zoom Meetings, Zoom Webinar, Zoom Rooms, and similar production tools.
Adept with various computer software and online tools, such as Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat Pro, Box, Google Workspace, and operating systems (Mac, Windows, and iOS).
Excellent organizational communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work calmly under pressure and present an attitude of attentiveness, courtesy, and professionalism when dealing with other team members, trustees, faculty, administration, staff, post-doctoral scholars, students, community, visiting speakers, and event patrons.
Exceptional customer service skills.
Effective and tenacious problem-solving skills.
Must possess a valid California Driver's License.
Ability to:
Work as a team member on a variety of projects.
Lift up to 40 pounds.
Bend in all directions, squeeze with arms and hands, crawl under furniture, climb stairs, and work outdoors in all kinds of weather.
Push and pull rolling items such as carts and camera cases.
Distinguish colors and differences in brightness on monitors.
Assess camera image focus.
Must be available to work overtime, evenings, and weekends.
Preferred Qualifications
Master of Fine Arts degree in communications, directing, production, audio engineering, film and media studies, or related field of study.
Studio and 4K camera operation and production.
Experience in the following:
Audio-visual support in an academic setting.
Experience with audio-visual and recording equipment in lecture halls and auditoriums.
The ability to assist with all aspects of video and audio production including setting up and cabling equipment and operating studio production video cameras, lights, green screens, and other relevant equipment and software.
Mix live audio and perform post-production audio sweetening.
Create graphics for video and event productions in several media formats.
Innate interest and excitement for research and science a plus.
