Job Summary/Basic Function: Summary: The Assistant Director for Residence Life is a 12-month live-in position, which reports to the Director of Housing and Residence Life as an essential member of the central staff in the Office of Housing and Residence Life and is chiefly responsible for facilitating all aspects of departmental student Resident Assistant staff selection, training, and ongoing development and supervises two full-time Residence Directors. Additionally, the AD for Residence Life delivers a comprehensive residential experience to residents of a 500-bed residence hall on the campus of Lamar University. This includes direct supervision of a student staff of Resident Assistants and Desk Assistants; planning and executing quality residence hall programming; promoting community interaction and student engagement; advising hall council; adjudicating student conduct cases; and responding to emergency and crisis situations.
Supervise, train, and provide guidance for two full-time live-in entry-level Residence Director staff members.
Directly supervise, train, and motivate a staff of 8 Resident Assistants and 5 Desk Assistants.
Coordinate weekly staff meetings with RAs at which information is communicated, ongoing training is offered, and team-building opportunities are provided.
Make clear your expectations of your student staff and hold them accountable through periodic staff evaluations and plans for continuous improvement.
Build a professional, knowledgeable, and responsive front office staff who are charged with being the faces and the voices of the Office of Housing and Residence Life.
Conduct weekly or bi-weekly one-on-one meetings with RAs.
Oversee the Programming and Residence Education Committee, which is chaired by one or more Residence Directors.
Staff Selection and Development:
Chair the Staff Selection Committee, which is charged with recruiting and selecting motivated student leaders to fill Resident Assistant and Desk Assistant positions. Specifically, the duties of the committee include the following: o Implement creative marketing strategies to maximize applicant pool. o Plan and coordinate group and individual interview processes, including both new and re-hire processes. o Work collaboratively with the RD of each hall on staffing for each semester.
Chair the Staff Training and Development Committee, which is charged with finding creative and engaging ways to make residence hall staff members competent to carry out the duties. Specifically, the duties. of the committee include the following: o Planning Fall and Spring pre-service RA training. o Planning six annual in-service trainings (September, October, November, February, March, and April) to provide ongoing training and development for RA staff o Establishing and assessing learning outcomes for each training event/activity in support of the mission of the Department of Housing and Residence Life. o Implementing engaging and effective best practices within the field for RA training and development. o Processing each semester RA evaluations and providing a concise report to the Staff Selection Committee for the re-hire process.
Monitor and provide support and guidance in the implementation of a programming model put forth by Housing and Residence Life.
Support the mission of Housing and Residence Life through purposeful, student-centered programming initiatives.
Attend programs and events, maintaining visibility throughout the hall community.
Create a culture of care by conducting ongoing risk assessments of residential students of concern, reporting issues and information to the CARE team.
Support the academic mission of Lamar University.
Adjudicate first-level student conduct cases as designated by the Dean of Students and Director of Housing and Residence Life.
Create and maintain an environment conducive to diversity, inclusion, and respect.
Empower RA staff to mediate roommate conflicts, serving as a resource in the establishment of roommate contract agreements to help effectively resolve conflict.
Facilitate the move-in, move-out, and room change processes.
Monitor and maintain an in-hall RA duty rotation system.
Maintain an accurate roster of residents that is always up to-date, coordinating occupancy verification's monthly.
Process paperwork in a timely manner in accordance with all policies and procedures.
Issue violation notices and fine letters for housing and handbook violations.
Create and manage the work schedules of RAs and DAs to maintain office/desk coverage.
Meet one-on-one weekly with the Director of Housing and Residence Life and attend departmental staff meetings.
Oversee the management of a programming budget.
Coordinate hall openings and closings.
Coordinate monthly health and wellness inspections.
Facilities Management/Summer Responsibilities:
Conduct thorough room-to-room summer maintenance inspections, maintaining an accurate, working knowledge of room statuses throughout the summer.
Submit work service requests for maintenance and cleaning issues.
Maintain open lines of communication with Facilities Management staff.
Conduct fire drills in conjunction with Risk Management.
Serve on a professional and para-professional 24-hom- on-call rotation for emergency situations that arise after-hours, weekends, and including some holidays.
Develop and implement policies and procedures in collaboration with the Director of Housing and Residence Life.
Serve on various committees as requested or approved by the Director of Housing and Residence Life.
Other duties as assigned by the Director of Housing and Residence Life.

Minimum Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications: Masters degree in college student personnel, higher education administration, or related field. Two years full-time professional experience working in a Housing and/or Residence Life program in higher education. Proficient in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and similar programs. Commitment to diversity, promoting inclusion, and demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations. Must meet the physical requirements of the position, which will include the ability to move between and within the residence hall community and possible lifting of up to 50 lbs.
Preferred Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications: 3 years of full-time professional experience working in a Housing and/or Residence Life program in higher education. Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate a diverse staff. Experience in residence hall staff training, selection, and on-going development. Marketing/advertising, budgeting, and crisis response experience. Knowledge of student development theory and experience applying theory to practice. Experience with creative problem solving and confidence when resolving complex issues.
